Selfishness is the easiest route to take, which is why it's so popular with children. Selfishness seems to be the default setting at birth. After all, babies and young children must somehow survive being both powerless and extremely vulnerable in a might makes right world.

Obviously some people must feel this way throughout their entire lives. That is the only explanation as to why they haven't learned to nurture, give or share the bounty of the world with the rest of us.
