I've always enjoyed my birthdays, but the novelty of biological aging wore off for me after my thirtieth lap around the Roman calendar.

As a culture, we are taught that aging is a sin, a failure in our existence, and that "everything is downhill after 30". From teenaged pop stars and models to botox and collagen infested former beauties in desperate denial of reality, everybody's waving the torch of youth in our aging faces. Meanwhile, we hide all the wrinkley people in old age homes and bring them out only to act in tv commercials for life insurance, denture cream and diapers.

In such an fearful environment filled with psychological warfare against aging, it's important to have something to offset that feeling of doom as we put on the mileage. I felt the sting of thirty myself, but I also noticed an even more interesting pattern that's been forming besides the one at my hairline: I am evolving as a person.
