Encouraging Literacy? Edition #14 — December 12, 2000 The Weather Report Well, here we are. I checked outside the backdoor about an hour ago and the snow was piling up pretty high. Hopefully everyone is safe and warm as they wait out this first "serious" snowfall of the year. It's kind of strange to have winter back again, after so many years of pretty much fall-like conditions lasting so late into the year. The uncertainty and power of weather's influence is one of those things that reminds us that we don't know everything; nor can we control even a small part of what little we do know... Weather is humbling. Remember the ice storms of two years ago? What would happen if something like that hit on a large scale and people from other regions couldn't come rescue us with their machinery and mercenary labour forces because they were inundated themselves? (Ahhh &mdash the typical early winter morbidity of a a non-skiing, non-skating Canadian citizen facing yet another winter...) REALITYCHECKERS: Encouraging literacy (and some thought). I've been working excessively and obsessively on a new project and my focus on writing this newsletter may be slightly affected. Usually I know my newsletter theme days in advance &mdash even though I write the entire thing just an hour or so before I send it out. This month I may be in trouble &mdash my starting out by talking about the weather was a dead give-away "Hey &mdash how bout those blue-jays, huh?" But have no fear, I can improvise on the spot. I'm going to offer you a few, um...offerings. I've been busy with the realitycheckers website as well, having finally come up with a "new look" for the article sections - which I'll be incorporating soon. I've tested the new format on a few new articles, just to break it in. Be honest now: when was the last time you had a good read of one of the articles on the realitycheckers website? Exactly! So I'm here to spur you on to read some of my new stuff and also show off the new design. Here are the links. Your comments are much appreciated. 1) Here's an article about the search for love called LOVE: Peering Over Our Fences. It tells a fairly common story...(but sorry, there's no penetration!) http://realitycheckers.com/html/Iaspire/love1.html 2) Here's a cool one on Homophobia that may rattle your cage a little. It's called The Tough Guy Training School: http://realitycheckers.com/html/Iconfront/homophobia1.html 3) And, after reading a few books on the subject, I wrote a little something on the prospect of soul reincarnation: http://realitycheckers.com/html/Iaspire/reincarnation1.html There are many, many articles at Realitycheckers.com; all of them dealing with important aspects of life &mdash the kind of stuff that can make or break lives. I hope that you'll find a use for what I've written, and will continue to write about. If you do make it out for a visit, test the new "ratings" system that I've attached to each article. Hey &mdash it's interactive! Oh, I've also finally solved my "Daily Reality Check" situation (I'd been trying to find the right program to allow me to offer a daily reality check to my visitors. You can find it linked to my home page - they're all from the book. Speaking of which... WE HAVE A WINNER!!! Congratulations go out to Scott Campbell of Toronto for being the first winner of the Reality Check "what's the moral of the story?" book contest. I'm extending the deadline of the contest to next month so I can get some more email responses from the rest of you guys who haven't entered - they're fun to read. (You know who you are!) Contest? What contest? OK, read the last newsletter from the archives: http://realitycheckers.com/newsletters/2000/news_Nov2000.html I think that's me, for now. All the best to each of you and a very merry Buy-Me-Stuff Day! to you, yourn, and theirn yourn. (huh?) (that's it, I'm shutting off this damned computer! Good night.) Happy Holidays!
