It's Been A Wild Month Edition #129 — March 30, 2010 Where do I start except at the beginning? March came in like a ball of lint and went out like a fuzzy caterpillar. I don't know what that means, but I felt I had to say it. I'm two days late, not because my dog ate my newsletter but because I've been intrigued by a new project I took on in mid March. I figure I'll talk about that for a minute and then tell you about some really cool websites that I found. My Lovely Black Box. Humility is a good thing for it allows us to continue learning. Such was my state of mind as I ventured over to "The Dark Side," as we Macintosh Computer elitists call it, by purchasing my first Windows-based PC. I shouldn't be too humble though because I did hand-pick each component and also, somewhat nervously, installed them by myself. I didn't scrimp on parts or on doing the research into what I needed to buy. If something were to go wrong, it would probably be me. And as I soon realized, there's no end to what you can learn. It all depends on how deep you want to go. One thing I'm not afraid of is to ask questions. I'd rather look naive than remain uninformed for the sake of my pride. Fortunately, once I'd made my decisions on what to buy, I found myself talking to a hardcore gaming enthusiast at the electronics store. He reassured me that my choices were good ones and even helped save me some money rather than try to get me to spend more of it. So far, so good. A few days later, everything arrived from various stores and I put it all together in about a day. However, no matter how many attempts I made, I couldn't install the Windows operating system. Something was wrong and I needed expert advise. Ed, an old buddy of mine, came to my rescue. He fixes computers and invited me over to help me solve my problems. He enlightened me more about my computer while breezing through various mechanical tasks. He also praised my choice of components and I left feeling quite comfortable with my new PC. Upon returning home, another friend called with a computer emergency. I directed her immediately to Ed, now that I could vouch for his expertise. Sometimes cosmic timing just seems perfect. And so today, after installing software for the last 48 hours, I have a newfound respect for the Windows side of the computer world. You see, while I still think that my Macintosh computers are of superior quality, easier to use, more power efficient and better designed, it would have also cost me four times as much to buy an equivalent Mac because I would have also had to replace about $2000 worth of recording hardware as well. My PC not only saved me all that money, but it also allows me to run some old software that had long become obsolete on my Macinstosh operating system. And so, to all you PC users out there, I humbly say, I should have done this years ago! When Hope Is A Bear. As March began, long before thoughts of computers entered my head, I found Hope. Not the kind you're thinking of. This Hope is cute and fuzzy and lives in a hole in the ground in Minnesota. She is two months old and lives with her mother, Lily. Here, have a look: Something that I enjoy even more is going on my daily safari. I could go three times a day, but then I'd never get anything done. Here's what I'm talking about:
Well, it was a little late in arriving, but I hope that I've offered you something of redeeming value to smile about this month. Don't forget nature; it's where we come from, it's what we are. Let's try to return to it once in a while, even if only through these cold machines that we can no longer seem to do without. Until next time. — Roland Kriewaldt Subscribe to free newsletter
