It's A Colorful Life

Edition #11 — Wed, 13 Sep 2000

Hi there folks! — me again! Full moon's up and it's got our name on it! Best of all, these words are FRESH off my keyboard on a fine Wednesday evening. None of this "prepackaged" e-news nonsense for my dear, sweet mailing list membership!

As with all my newsletters, I write about my life and try to make it relevant to yours. But let's face it, if I wasn't writing about myself, I wouldn't have anything to say. Course "myself" has seen some serious tarmac throughout these 38 years, and my cache of "ME-istic" anecdotes could keep me talking for weeks without running out of fuel. Attendance to such lectures would be sparse, of course...

In this month's newsletter, I'm going to talk about creative evolution, and tolerance for each of us occupying our own little space in time.

Are You Ready For Colour?

A few years ago, as I began my Mac-Journey into graphic art, I slowly began awakening to that attribute of nature called "colour". Having been a musician for so long, I related best to the world by way of sound, through music and language. I could pick a specific singer out of a line-up of ten who sounded identical. But in the world of visuals and colours, I was completely green! [Clap! Clap! Clap!]

Prior to then, I hadn't thought about objects in terms of their colour. Sure, I knew the sky was blue — but so what?!?! Not having to recreate what my eyes beheld, a simple verbal description would suffice - "blue". A simple game of word association. Seeing the world from my limited perspective was good enough for maintaining the level of awareness I had required up until that point in time.

But, to bring out the visual artist in me, I had to enter into a more intimate relationship with colour — moving beyond my casual flirtation into a passionate affair. An artist with an understanding of colour gains so much for himself in terms his or her self-expression. Without colour, the artist's inner and outer worlds cannot be done justice with mere shades of grey.

At the time I also had the good fortune of befriending two very talented artists whose teachings about colour and their creative process I also absorbed. I saw the patience; the trust; the passion, as well as the confusion and disillusionment of works whose purpose remained unfulfilled, or incomprehensible. I saw them facing themselves.

Creation is an emotional relationship between your present "now" self and your future "then" self — a kind of tug of war between a pretty good YOU and an even better YOU. You are constantly birthing new values; new frontiers of awareness and knowing. And that can leave stretch marks... I've definitely acquired some over the years. Birthing the future can also be painful and frightening to the person you once were. If you hold on to the past too tightly, then you'll tense up and suffocate the newborn "Future You".

Today, I can state with confidence that my work in graphic arts is on par with most any professional in the field. Maybe not the GIANTS of the industry — but the pros.

Amazing Greys

This same experience of "awakening to colour" defined my awakening to spirituality. One day, back in 1993, my life took on a whole new level of meaning when I unearthed a gold mine of insights. They also turned a rather "grey" emotional existence into one of unimaginably vibrant colour. And as I came to know these new "colours" of spirituality better, putting them on my personality palette and working their richness into the details of my life, only then did I begin to see them in the world around me as well. And not a minute sooner.

So, spiritually speaking, I was once extremely colour blind. Not a bad man, just an emotionally illiterate one.

So what's all this colour stuff mean to you?

Well, I believe that your eyes are given only what they are ready to see; your mind, only what it is ready to understand; your heart, only what it is ready to feel.

We are an evolution (our lifetimes) within an evolution (our species) and so we see the ascent toward perfection even within our very own lifetimes here on Earth. We don't have to live for a million years to see these dramatic shifts in global consciousness as they manifests within our own lives. There is so much more evolutionary activity going beyond mere genetics. We are evolving spiritually, as well. All of us.

Which leads me to my final point:

Whenever you're ready: that's when you'll be ready! Not a nanosecond sooner. There are no shortcuts and no detours. Our personal evolution is designed specifically for us. It caters ONLY to our needs; it matters ONLY to us, and it can ONLY be experienced by us in the way that we feel it occurring. What we do with that experience is how others realize that we're actually evolving.

Our fruits: a testament to the skills of their tender.

We are the creators of that "flow" we are going with. Each of us is in our own little canoe, riding with the currents of life amidst the waves of our own unique existence. Together, we are the armada of Humanity; seekers on our way to some unknown glory to one day be fulfilled.

Where you are at this moment, you are also perfect in that moment. As perfect as you are meant to be — before you are made even more so in the moment that follows. You are changing, even as you read this. Becoming more than what you've ever been; ever known; could have understood.

You are that rainbow of possibility, forming in the gentle mist of time, in the rays of hope and love for what you see of yourself in a future dream. You are an artist and creator; fashioned in the image of The Creator. The Earth is our family portrait. Take hold of your brush; find a colour that's yours, and begin painting.

Colourfully yours, Rolando Da Vinci
